Potholes in My Blog - Hopie "Live Love"

From: Here.
By: David Reneke
On: 9/14/2011

Kreayshawn is borderline terrible, we all know that. I mean “Gucci Gucci” was cool, but it has become pretty evident that she has no real value to the world of music. Hopie, a rising female San Francisco MC that I am only hearing for the first time today, reminds me a lot of Kreayshawn, only without all the corny lyrics and random drama we have come to expect from the puntable hip-hop version of Lady Gaga. I mean, their voices are nearly identical, they both create catchy rap tracks, yet Hopie seems far more genuine and true to the actual craft. Even the cover artwork you are staring at above seems like something that little rodent of a rapper would put out, right? No shots at Hopie though, I think we need more fun and loving females in hip-hop. Anyway, Hopie’s full-length Raw Gems is out now, and it features the likes of MURS, Del the Funky Homosapien, Moe Green and more.

Bay Area female emcee Hopie may not yet be a household name but that could all soon change once the hip-hopper's brand new self-released album Raw Gems, which with production by 6Fingers captures the artist at her best and in some excellent company (guest spots from MURS, Del the Funky Homosapien, LuckyIAm, Moe Green, Psalm One, Josie Stingray, and Donwill) makes its way out into the hip-hop sphere and hip-hop fans catch up on this San Francisco secret. The new album, which dropped this week, is the third full-length album from the artist who until very recently went by the rap name Hopie Spitshard and who was also known as simply Hopie Spitta. Tomorrow night (Thursday September 15th) the Manila, Philippines born and Daly City, San Francisco raised artist will be throwing a big record release party / hip-hop showcase at 330 Ritch for which she'll be joined by an array of local talents including DJ Snayk Eyez, La Femme Deadly Venoms, Rocky Rivera, and Hard Candy,

Can't get enough of hip hop? Neither can I, but of course, we as ladies, cant help but to notice that "the game" is dominated by mostly men. There have been some females that rocked a mic and represented for the girls in the past -Queen Latifah, Salt 'N' Peppa, Eve, and lest we forget, the self-proclaimed Harajuku Barbie herself, Nicki Minaj. But those are just some of the names that have been shining in the spotlight. Is lesser known hip hop more your scene? Searching for that sparkly diamond in the rough of the underground? Well, look no further.

Enter Hopie Spitshard-with ease, attitude, and undeniably dope flow, this "Diamond Dame" (also the name of her debut album) is certainly going to be the cherry on top of the hip hop genre in your iTunes. I promise you'll be jamming to her as she raps over hard-hitting bass lines in her song "Trunk"

or find yourself swaying to the beat as she tells you what's up in "Be a Lady".

And with an album and EP out, let's just say you'll be doing both for a while. Hopie definitely reminds me of everything I love about women and being a woman- educated with a doctorate from U.C. Hastings and versed in the ways of everything from violin to spoken word to guitar, she's an inspiration for my right and left brain!

You can check out her website at www.hopiespitshard.com where you can also find links to download and purchase both her debut album The Diamond Dame and EP Dulce Vita!

20 Questions with Hopie

In May of 2010 I was treated to an entertaining performance by a refreshing female rapper, then known as Hopie Spitshard. I've been informed that she recently dropped the "Spitshard" from her name. I was impressed by how this petit filipino emcee took command of the stage by standing on a chair and refusing to let the audience fall into a zombie standstill, a common occurrence in the Hawaii music scene. Last month I was offered the opportunity to have a segment dedicated to the young and talented Hopie. I quickly jumped on the opportunity. This Bay Area hip-hop artist and recently graduated law student has just released her newest EP, Dulce Vita and it totally kicks ass. This past April marked her second performance in Hawaii and her popularity is quickly growing here and in the Mainland. The Diamond Dame and self proclaimed pot-head took time out of her busy schedule to answer my twenty questions. Hopie is a prime example of Good Habits manifested and trust me, she still spits hard.

1. What is your full name?
Hello, my name is Kae Hope Ranoa, aka Hopie.

2. Where are you from?
I was born in Manila but am from the San Francisco Bay Areaaaaaaaa....

3. What are a few good habits that you have?
Making the music I love!

Hopie Spitshard Interview with WAFH

We recently got to chat with up and coming Bay Area emcee, Hopie Spitshard. She gives us insight on how long she’s been in the game, who she’s listening to right now and what’s coming up next for the young wordsmith.

WAFH: Which emcees have inspired or influenced you the most as an artist?

HOPIE: Of course I was heavily influenced by Lauryn Hill. She was just such a powerful female figure, and we were really lucky to have her. I also am completely enamored of Erykah Badu and her effervescent creativity. Then, of course, there is Jean Grae, MC Lyte, and Bahamadia. Missy Elliot was gigantic, too.

Hard work pays off in the end however, and this Summer is Hope’s for the taking. With the re-release of her latest EP Dulce Vita and much more new music, videos and shows to come, you’ll be seeing her everywhere this Summer.

Ill Talk w/ Hopie

Talk a little about your Filipino roots and heritage.

My parents are both Filipino. I was born in Manila and we left to San Francisco at a very young age, so I am an interesting balance between 1st generation immigrant and 1st generation American. I speak both English and Tagalog, enjoy Filipino food, and know my American and Philippine history. I still have some very Filipino traits because I was raised in a Philippine, but I am still too American for my parents and the rest of my family, which is something unique to immigrant children. I'm very proud of my heritage.

Hopie Spitshard Exclusive Interview - www.Rawemag.com

From: Here.
Posted by: Erin Ashley on February 12, 2011

For years, when people thought of the Bay Area music scene they compared it to the music from the region that was out in the form of “Thizzing” and “Hyphy,” however, the Bay Area has much more to offer. With a new crop of artists putting quality music out, individuals are able to see a clear example of the diversity that is the Bay Area. With that being said, there’s a clear lack of female representation in the movement, but among those that are putting a face on female emcees from the region would be San Francisco based emcee Hopie Spitshard.

Entering the music scene in 2008 with her independently released debut album, Diamond Dame, Spitshard gained national attention leading to being nominated as on of URB Magazine’s Next 1000. Spitshard released two videos from the project, but left the spotlight to do something that’s stereotypically not hip-hop—she continued school and earned her doctorate from U.C Hastings.

Hopie, is now returning to the scene in the form of her new EP Dulce Vita (it’s dope, let me just put that out there) and we got a chance to speak with her about the project, how she’s grown from Diamond Dame to now, any adversities she’s had to face being both a Filipino woman, and a female emcee, as well as talking to her about the state of females in hip-hop in general. Make sure to visit her site and download her new EP Dulce Vita, at hopiespitshard.com, as well as make sure to connect with her via Twitter @hopiespitshard.

Manila born, Kae Hope Ranoa is not your average female rapper. She goes by Hopie Spitshard. I actually found Hopie online. I was online one night and stumbled onto this Filipina rapper’s website. Hopie caught my attention with her strong and powerful lyrics, so I immediately had to contact her to set an interview. So, with much anticipation I introduce you to Hopie Spitshard.

ABY: What inspired you to get into music?

HOPIE:I think I was inspired by music as a child because I had a really incredibly difficult childhood, and, like many kids, my only refuge was my room. My room was where I practiced my instruments, listened to music, and eventually began writing music both as an escape and as a way to process my thoughts. I come from a musical family, so it would be easy to say that either of my parents were key influences, but I really want to say I got into music despite my environment.

If you’re a fan of California’s Bay Area music, Hopie doesn’t disappoint; if you’re a fan of old-school underground legend Del the Funky Homosapien, Hopie’s got you; and if you’re a fan of the new West coast movement (U-N-I, Diz Gibran, Dom Kennedy, A.Spit, etc.) then Hopie rocks your fucking eardrums.

By: Tia Marie on 01/08/2010 at 12:42

Recently here at Justin.tv, we have been featuring some great hip hop talent, to the excitement of our users. It's been a lot of fun showcasing these artists, all with different styles, to expose the many different layers of hip hop culture.

We most recently featured Stones Throw artists Strong Arm Steady, who have long been a staple of classic West Coast hip hop. The group is comprised of Krondon, Phil Da Agony, and Mitchy Slick, with previous members including hard-hitting notables like Xzibit and Planet Asia. Strong Arm Steady was also joined by the legendary DJ J.Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies. During their broadcast, they chatted with fans, played some tracks, and spit some rhymes. Check out the embedded clip from their broadcast!

We have also featured Bay Area-local up and coming artists. Hopie Spitshard may not look like your typical rapper, but she embraces her identity as a female rapper and proudly announces her Filipina heritage: two significantly underrepresented groups in hip-hop culture. She played some classic and unreleased tracks, and had a blast chatting with fans, new and old.

DJ Platurn of the Oakland Faders came on and discussed some upcoming projects and collaborations he is working on, and also played some tracks for the viewers. Keno from hip hop duo The Otherside did some freestyling for the viewers, and was backed up by DJ Jun's beatboxing.

We also featured SWTBRDS, a hip hop collective that consists of emcees, DJs, producers, and artists. They discussed the state of Bay Area hip hop, influences, and upcoming projects. The broadcast had some guests, including da Vinci, Ammbush, DJ Strategy, DJ Teeko, and Stash Magazine. da Vinci spit a few rhymes and Teeko did a set for the viewers, which was a hit in the chatroom!

We have a lot of talent lined up, so stay tuned for more hip hop artists to be featured and don't forget to add these channels to be notified of their next broadcasts!

For those that may not know.
My picks.
Best Music Today.

. . .

Also, there's one additional rapper I'd like to include, HopieSpitsHard. People immediately discriminate against female rappers right off the bat, assuming that the most plausible personality of a female rapper is a person that uses sex appeal to sell. Because of all the skewed facts being drawn into the ignorant community, a lot of people turn their heads when they hear of female rappers. Those of you that think like that are ignorant. Females can spit too. HipHop is for everybody. To me, good music is good music. No matter what race, gender, face, if its good its good. HopieSpitsHard makes good music, that's all that matters. Not whether shes a man or woman. Which is why you should drop the stereotypical nonsense and get with something a little more progressive. She's an intellectual rapper who can spit raw rhymes in a cunning, cagy type fashion. End of story.
